Injustice In Search of Exoneration
The Douglas Espino Story – Injustice in Search of Exoneration. Los Angeles is known as the “Gang Capital of America”. Over 39,000 gang members commit an estimated 7,000 violent crimes annually. Once, gang members used chains and knives to commit crimes. Now they use shotguns, automatic rifles, handguns and explosives. Once, victims of gang violence were rival gang members. Now the victims are often innocent bystanders and residents killed or injured by stray bullets . . . or people charged with crimes they did not commit. Certain gang-infested neighborhoods are also frighteningly similar to war zones. And in one of those LA neighborhoods, near Pico & Union Streets, on a typical Saturday night on June 7, 2008, a “non-gang member” named Douglas Espino became a “victim” of gangland violence and terror that threatens to change his life forever. Douglas was convicted on March 13, 2009 on 7 counts of attempted murder. He faces a life sentence in prison – for crimes he did not commit! He is innocent . . . and he’s a victim of LA’s gangs and the criminal justice system. This Insider Exclusive Special raises questions and issues about the breakdown in the criminal justice system for Douglas Espino, including:/n1. How eyewitnesses live in fear for the lives, but now come forward to try and exonerate Douglas. 2. How an overzealous prosecutor appears willing to win a conviction at any cost. 3. Why the LAPD has failed to look for the real shooter. 4. And how the Espino family claims that Douglas’ defense attorney failed to provide an adequate defense. This is Douglas Espino’s true story, as told through the eyes and words of his family, his friends and key eyewitnesses whose lives are “threatened” by LA’s most notorious gangs, but despite these real dangers, want to see justice done. Douglas can’t be with us today. He’s currently incarcerated in the LA County Jail, awaiting sentencing on June 25, 2009. Joining us to discuss his wrongful conviction are Charlene Rosen-Espino, Douglas’ sister-in-law and most active, outspoken champion, and Charlene’s father, Bob Rosen, a well respect securities attorney with the law firm of Rosen & Associates (www.rosen-law.com). Also joining us are Douglas’ mother, Maria Escalante; Douglas’ sister, Amanda Escalante, and some eyewitnesses who wish to remain anonymous for fear of gang retaliation.
